GPhC shares advice on safe prescribing and dispensing in response to emerging patient safety concerns

The GPhC’s Chief Pharmacy Officer, Roz Gittins, has written to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy owners to raise awareness of some emerging issues which have led to concerns being raised with us.

Pharmacy teams have been asked to review the information and think about any actions they should take to ensure patients and the public receive safe and effective care.

The email highlights concerns and provides advice on areas including:

  • Dispensing and supplying methotrexate
  • Supplying other higher risk medicines including propranolol
  • Interactions, Contraindications and Counselling
  • Antibiotic stewardship with fluoroquinolones and Yellow Card reporting of side effects
  • Utilising IT systems to support safe prescribing and dispensing

The full email is available to read online.
